Ná Lig Sinn i gCathú
Today, Sunday 28th September, 2008, at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center at Union Station (IMCC) you get the opportunity to learn the “Our Father” in Irish.
This is very useful for, well, the only time I’ve ever said the Our Father as Gaeilge was when attending Irish mass - that is mass in the Irish language as opposed to just mass with an Irish flavour (like black pudding, that has an Irish flavour).
Time was when our first mass of a Sunday was in Irish. We used to go before we’d go hiking in the mountains. But as mass was at 8:30am, a time on a Sunday that most Irish people never saw from the respectable side, it gradually was phased down to a monthly affair at a time of the day that people had heard of.
School and the Gaeltacht were other times I indulged in formal prayers in Irish, the prayers in my head being more freeform and, I think it’s fair to say, mixed of language.
You can learn the Lord’s Prayer in Irish, whatever your religion, at 2pm today. It costs $3 for IMCC members, and $5 for nonmembers.
The Our Father is taught by Irish language instructor Renata Henley.
This event is posted on the Kansas City Irish events calendar.
