Larry Kirwan of Black 47 at a Kansas City Festival
Ireland’s Larry Kirwan of Black 47 was in Kansas City at the weekend, and Jason Harper of the Pitch got to meet him.
Like last year Kirwan was in town wearing his writer hat. At the 2nd Kansas City Literary Festival he was discussing his memoir and the art of non-fiction writing.
And like all of us who have met Larry, Jason discovered how nice New York’s most famous Wexford man is - give or take his erstwhile colleague Pierce Turner.
Kirwan looks a bit like Larry David in a wig and is just as smart and funny but is fearlessly political (and politically fearless). I quickly bought up a copy of his band’s 1993 major-label debut, “Fire of Freedom”. Kirwan gave me change for my $20 out of his own pocket and talked about working with album producer Ric Ocasek as he signed the insert of my CD. Nice as hell, that Kirwan
And from Black 47’s 1993 album, Fire of Freedom, Jason gives you access, with Larry Kirwan’s blessing, to MP3s of Maria’s Wedding and Funky Céilí (Bridie’s Song).
Read it all, including a review on that Fire of Freedom album, on the Pitch’s Wayward Blog
