Kiss My Arse Kansas City
Today Kansas City, Friday May 2, 2008, Kansas City, Missouri you can kiss my arse.
Or, to show I can assimilate, you can kiss my ass.
Yesterday you learned the Irish word for “Kiss” is póg
And that an anglicisation of that, then pluralised, is where the name of the Pogues came from.
Strange name as that may seem for band, it’s because the Pogues were originally called Pogue Mahone, an anglicisation of póg mo thóin. The word tóin means “arse” and mo is the first person possessive. I don’t know about you but I’m very possessive about my arse.
Then sombody told the BBC what Pogue Mahone meant, and the band shortened their name.
As the leaders of trad infused with punk The Pogues supply multiple variations on their name to various tribute bands and bands just genuflecting at them.
Pog Mo Thon are one such band. They come without fadas and with a letter less, but then the self declared Comedy / Celtic / Folk outfit from Omaha give us something they call “not your parent’s Irish music” - which is fitting because that’s what the Pogues themselves first gave us all those years ago.
Tonight in Kansas City you can see the band more or less calling itself “Kiss My Ass”, because Pog Mo Thon are playing Davey’s Uptown, at 32nd & Main. They start at 7pm, and because KC has end times, they end at 10:30pm
Tickets are $5 at the door. The gig is for those aged 21 and over only.
Online you can listen to and see Pog Mo Thon on MySpace
I should warn you though, that Pog Mo Thon dabble in music related to pirates, and not all of it to Grace O’Malley.
