Kansas City GAC Meeting
The KC GAC is holding its Club meeting TONIGHT, Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at The Gaf in Waldo at 6pm.
The meeting is open to everybody, members, prospective members, or just plain voyeurs. If you’re not a member consider joining up to a club that particiaptes in a very real Irish activity in Kansas City.
Matters to be discussed tonight are upcoming events, the direction of the club, jerseys, future matches, and other club business.
As ever Tuesday night at The Gaf for the KC Gaelic Athletic Club is TV night so you’ll also get to see 2 different Gaelic Games. For that reason the meeting side of thigns won’t drag on.
In Ireland right now it’s championship time. That means in both sporting codes of Gaelic Football and Hurling the four provinces are deciding their champions based on a straight knockout competition between their respective counties.
We’re talking the historic 32 counties of the whole island of Ireland here, and not including recent administrative changes in the Republic nor indeed the completely different local government system that exists in Northern Ireland.
That means you have 5 counties in Connacht, 6 counties in Munster, 9 counties in Ulster, and a whopping 12 counties in Leinster. Until not that long ago the 4 provincial champions provided the 4 semi-finalists of the All-Ireland in both football and hurling, but relatively recent changes to both championships now permit all counties knocked out in their respective provincial championship a route back in to compete ultimately for the All-Ireland with the earlier they were knocked out giving the greater number of play-off games to get through.
So yes, that means through what is often jokingly called the “back-door system” a county from Connacht could be the All-Ireland Champions with a different county from Connacht being the Connacht Champions.
Anyway we’re starting to reach the provinicial final stage, and the first round of qualifier play-offs, so get yourself down to the KC GAC meeting and have a goo at the telly.
Incidentally if you are talking about Ireland’s western province, don’t ever spell it Connaught. And while I’m at it, when you’re talking about Gaelic Football, don’t ever call it Irish Football.
The Gaf is on the west side of Wornall, just at the end of the strip that runs from Gregory - pretty much where 71st Terrace would be if it ran through.
This event should be on the Kansas City Irish Events calendar, so it should.
