Irish Movie “Once” Wins At Sundance Film Festival
Once, the Irish movie made by John Carney starring Glen Hansard of the Frames, and Czech pianist Marketa Irglova, has just won the Audience Award for World Cineama Dramatic category at the Sundance Film Festival.
UPDATE: Once Wins Best Song Oscar
If you’ve been keeping an eye on the reactions to films at Sundance this week, you will know that Once has been causing quite a reaction (see below for examples). I’ve been following a few bloggers who’ve been posting live from the festival and all have singled out Once.
Carney was in The Frames himself once upon a time, leaving to pursue his film career, and making anything for 100,000 euros, dollars, or pounds is impressive.
Here is a video featuring Carney and Hansard, interspersed with clips from the movie:
Being such a low buget movie usually means the chances of seeing Once in the middle of mainstream multiplex America are slim, but the attention and reaction at Sundance have already landed Once a distrubution deal. Cinnematical reported a couple of days back that Summit Entertainment have acquired worldwide rights (except Ireland) for this musical which isn’t a musical, if you know what I mean.
Last time Hansard was touring in the Midwest it was with Irglova, but it’s now three or four years since the Frames came to town (more or less) when they played Lawrence, Kansas opening for Damien Rice.

… and 24 hours later, RTÉ 6:01 News deigns it a story. Is it delayed reaction or just time difference?
That seems like a seriously delayed reaction. Maybe RTÉ hasn’t realized what speed the online world moves at?
The film was amazing. My two sisters and I felt it was the best of the nine films we saw last weekend. We were especially enthralled with the music, and are anxious to buy the soundtrack. Subtle performances that melted our hearts with a back drop of such a powerful soundtrack made the overall effect of the movie transcendent. Bravo to all involved.
Just saw the film tonight outstanding, fabulously different I recommend it to all walks of life !!! Can’t wait to buy the soundtrack. Well done there should be more Irish films like this.
