Irish Government Tells People: Stop It Now
In the Kansas City Star’s relentless reporting of Irish news, yesterday was featured the Irish Government’s latest plan to address Ireland’s chewing gum problem. Being a misty-eyed romantic, the streets of Dublin, polka-dotted by gum are among the things I miss about home.
This latest plan sees the government abandon the approach which worked so suddenly and effectively with regard to the plastic bag problem, and instead will tell people to just not do it, to not put their gum on the street. Genious. Ah now, would ya stop. Amazing nobody thought of that before. I wonder what the people will do?
I’m guessing if they had taken the same approach to plastic bags Ireland’s hedgerows would still be decorated with flapping pieces of plastic and I wouldn’t have a request from my mother to bring plastic bags to Ireland when I travel across the Atlantic in a few weeks.

I think the reason the plastic bags worked is because you were paying for something youo never had to before. With chewing gum it is just a price rise
