Irish Blogosphere Out of Step with Public
In the last couple of weeks Irish blogs all over the world - well, all over Ireland - have been foaming at the mouth over Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s personal payments received back in the 1990s when he was Minister for Finance. Latest figures, however, show support for the Taoiseach personally, for his party, and for the coalition party that kept him in office, increasing - with support for opposition parties decreasing.
In truth boggers, and the Mainstream Media, were foaming as much for how Bertie reacted once the story broke than for the original sins, nevertheless the voters don’t care. Well they do care, they in fact agree, just not enough to vote anyone at fault out of office. That’s wonderfully Irish, and I’m not sure why I like it.
64% believe that Mr Ahern was wrong to take money for personal use while he was minister for finance yet his support has increased to 53%, and support for his party Fianna Fáil is up 8 points to 39%.
The main opposition parties? Down. Fine Gael, 26 per cent (down 2); Labour, 11 per cent (down 4); and Sinn Féin, 8 per cent (down 1)
