Irish Author to Run for Ireland
Speaking of Michael Collins, congratulations are due to another Michael Collins - the Washington-based author who has been asked to represent Ireland in the 100km at the European Championships in Brussels in June. Collins ran for Ireland 20 years ago before moving to the US. This sporting development follows the completion of his latest novel:
Following final edits, he embarked on a pair of marathons he named his Fire & Ice Challenge. On Feb. 28, he won the half-marathon portion of the Sahara Marathon, a 21-kilometer race in Algeria to raise money for sports facilities in a refugee camp that houses the Saharawi people. Temperatures exceeded 90 degrees.April 8, Collins topped the field of 54 to claim the North Pole Marathon title as temperatures plummeted to 50 degrees below zero. In photos published last month in Sports Illustrated, ice clung to his eyebrows
Don’t ever stigmatize yourself with how you were defined in high school Collins has said, in reference to his literary accomplishments despite being called a ‘dumb jock’ years back.
The novelist, a Limerick native who left Ireland for the US in the 1980s, had his novel, The Keepers of the Truth shortlisted for the 2000 Man Booker Prize. Three of his novels are in the early stages of being adapted for movies.
I’ve been reading for two years that Anthony Minghella of Cold Mountain and The English Patient has been talking to him about a movie, but he is very committed according to Collins.
