The Elders in The Leaven
The Leaven is the official newspaper of the archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, and in the build up to Paddy’s Day I missed this sizeable article by Jill Ragar Esfeld.
It covers Ian’s joing of the Elders, the writing of songs, and the recent tour of Ireland including Ben Meade’s film project.
the first time County Wicklow native Byrne suggested a tour of the Emerald Isles, the other band members balked.
“They said, ‘We’re American lads playing Irish music. What are they going to think of us over there? ’” recalled Byrne. “I said, ‘Don’t worry, they’re going to love you.’”
Byrne’s prediction was on target, but the draw in Ireland wasn’t the Celtic rock sound so much as it was the Americans singing it.
“The Irish weren’t looking at us as an Irish band or Irish music,” said Byrne. “They felt that it was in there, but they were more ‘Americana, country.’
