Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It
From Tuesday June 19th - Saturday June 23rd, 2007, as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival, part-time KC resident, Cork’s own Máirtín de Cógáin stars in a solo performance of the world premiere of Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It.
Now I’ve had the good fortune to hear the entire performance of Máirtín de Cógáin in a previous solo production called De Bogman, and so entertaining was it that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Thailand
Like De Bogman, this new play Thailand is a Be Your Own Banana Theatre Company production.
Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It is directed by Brian Desmond and is set all the way back in July 2006:
The economy’s flying in Celtic tiger Cork, and Declan is off to Thailand for the holiday of a lifetime with the lads. 24 years old, in a foreign land, Declan embarks on a bizarre journey of self-discovery and cheap thrills. You see, Declan’s been going through a bit of a bad patch with the ol’dolls back home. So it’s off to Pattaya for two weeks to end the drought once and for all
You only get to see what’s described as “a unique take on modern Ireland and it’s contribution to the East Asian tourist economy” for just the one week in Cork, and then you’ll find Mr de Cógáin reunited with the rest of the Fuchsia Band as they tour North America and many of its major Irish festivals.
You can see a relatively clean-shaven Máirtín and his story-telling seanchaí skills on this clip from Dublin’s Balcony TV.
Venue: The Quad Bar, Tuckey St. at 8:30pm
Tickets: €12/€10 (We’re talking euros)
Bookings: 021-4274077 (not a Missouri or Kansas code)
Website: www.corkfestival.com
Who knows, maybe later in the year, or next year even, Kansas City will get lucky enough to see Máirtín perform Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It at the Cafe & maybe, or the Irish Cultural Center down at Union Station?

mairtin’s a busy boy—he’s nominated for a balconytv award, and will be performing at the awards ceremony in dublin on saturday 9 june
Martha,
Sorry there were problems with the comment facility there for a bit.
Yes he is very busy indeed, and here is the link to that Máirtín’s BalconyTV nomination and performance
For one whole week ‘Barley’ played at The Moxie in Springfield. I finally got to see it! ‘Twas a treat to see him on the big screen.
Mairtin told me about this show (Thailand) when I got to see him perform (lucky me) in Branson. I didn’t realize it was coming up so soon. He seemed really excited about it. I hope it is well received.
