Tenuous Irish-Related Tip for Oscars
It being Oscar Sunday. let’s look forward a few hours. While Peter OToole is the most obviously Irish chance for an Oscar, my tip for an Irish-related Oscar is Thelma Schoonmaker in Film Editing.
No she’s not Irish but The Departed is an Irish-American story. Well okay it’s a Hong Kong story, but once you put Matt Damon’s Boston accent in there, it’s as Irish as walking through an iceberg into a museum in Missouri. And the way the soundtrack uses the Dropkick Murphys is pulsating and menacing. Is there any other way to use Shipping Up To Boston?
I know when I walked out of the AMC Cinema on Ward Parkway last year after watching The Departed, I wasn’t wondering if that was Van Morrison singing Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb; no, I was thinking, hey that’s great editing, the best I’ve seen all year, Oscar winning material even.
Oh and since we’re on this Irish-American gem, the most fun of the cinematic year was watching Mark Wahlberg’s character, Dignam, who’s in the Best Supporting Actor category. And I suppose if the Academy prefer The Departed to Babel Scorsese himself just might win.
UPDATE: As predicted, Schoonmaker wins. Irish KC, for the inside slant on film editing.
Less tenuous is the film about an Irish priest, Deliver Us From Evil, in the Documentary category.
