“One of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country not to be held on St. Patrick’s Day”, so says the Sun Tribune of the Snake Saturday parade in North Kansas City.
Deadline Feb 27: Great chance for charities to win
As far as I know the largest St Patrick’s Day parade held west of the Mississippi after 6pm on a one-way street, is still up for grabs.
The Snake Saturday Parade will begin at 11:00am at 14th and Swift, heading north to Armour Road, then east to Howell, disbanding past 18th Avenue and Howell.
The parade is really all about dispensing prize money especially to charities with somewhere between $40,000 and $50,000 being awarded to winners of 3 parade categories and also the North Kansas City Missouri State Barbecue Championships, held each year in conjunction with Snake Saturday.
Over 40 charities are expected to win prize money ranging from $100 to $7,000.
The number of parade entries is limited to 115, and the deadline for entering is Wednesday, February 27, 2008.
The entry fee is $50 and there are been some changes this year to save time in the parade - including the dropping of all political entries, and new requirements for commercial entries requiring floats and theme designated units only. Entry is on a first come first served basis.
Snake Saturday, organized by Northland Festivals Inc., also is seeking contestants for the Lad & Lassie Contest, which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the North Kansas City Community Center, 1999 Iron St. Northland children ages 5, 6 and 7 can enter to win the title of Lad or Lassie. Children ages 2, 3 and 4 may enter the Little Lad and Little Lassie contest. The four winners, displaying their outgoing personality, charm and Irish spirit, will be selected to ride in the parade March 15. The entry deadline is Saturday, March 1.

The dedicated listing of all St Patrick’s Day related events for the KC area for 2008 will be launched within the next few days. It will be similar to last year’s Paddy’s Day page
According to the Guinness records folks, the shortest St. Patrick’s parade is in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I don’t remember if they hold it on the 17th, or on the Saturday before. Last year, they turned down a bunch of marching Elvises. (Elvi?)
