Shawnee St Patrick’s Parade 2009
The Irish American Club of Johnson County and the Shawnee St. Patrick’s Parade Committee are having their 27th Annual Shawnee St. Patrick’s Parade this Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 1pm.
As ever it starts at Johnson Drive and Monrovia Street and then heads east on Johnson Drive to downtown Shawnee.
This year’s theme is “Show us the green and we’ll show you the gold” so expect to see a lot of green this year. Ha, ha. And spare a thought for the colour orange, which occupies just as much space on the Irish flag as green does.
The awards ceremony for 11 categories (the “gold” in the theme) will take place after the parade at the Knights of Columbus Hall at Johnson Drive and King Street. That’s where you can also indulge in such Irish traditions as corned Eddie Delahunt and cabbage.
This year’s sponsors are the City of Shawnee, State Farm Insurance agent Jim Allen, Deffenbaugh Industries, Margarita’s Restaurant, La Petite Academy, 949 KCMO Radio, Court of Appeals, Center Body & Tow, F & C Painting and Steve Skeet Karaoke.
The Shawnee City Council designated Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland (see my painting of Listowel) as a Sister City back in 1985, and at 4:30pm, after the parade awards, the Sister Cities Committee Duck Race will again take place on the Turkey Creek tributary, starting behind Danally’s, 6022 Nieman Road.
The person holding the ticket matching the winning duck could win a trip to Ireland. Duck tickets are available at the Knights of Columbus Hall the day of the parade.
