Reason to Leave Ireland #162
It is twenty to five on a Saturday. Rupert Murdoch has yet to invent English football, and Al Gore has not yet invented the Internet. So you make do with what the English themselves have been playing for over a hundred years. And you make do with the teleprinter. You are watching Grandstand and every minute is gold.
Welcome to BBC Northern Ireland. Your time is up. Yes every week you think they’ll forget, or they’ll be late. They never are.
Every week you believe again that you’ll get to hear all the English football results, from, well, from England. And every week as BBC NI jumps in, usually mid-result, you continue to watch because even your legs are shocked at the interruption. You may well be an Irish nationalist, but you really don’t want to go from Manchester City to Distillery.
And so, speaking of Irish comedian Barry Murphy, I was revisiting some Apres Match moments, and the BBC NI Sports Results sketch reminded me of why so many people emigrated from the land where you could receive BBC NI to a different BBC region.
Some other Sunday Irish video moments:
• The Last Temptation of Hughie and Owenie
• A Taxing Night
• Choppers by Paul Farran
