KC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Has Dog as Co-Marshall
Soty, a Kansas City police dog (and his human partner, officer David Magruder) are joining Fire Capt. Louis “Scooter” Martin to lead the St Patrick’s Day parade on its new Westport route this year.
Route
The 36th Annual Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day parade begins at Linwood and Broadway at 11am on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009, St Patrick’s Day itself, from where it then goes south on Broadway, into Westport, to 43rd Street. Length: 1.29 miles
The Move
Despite much talk about traditions and the history of the Irish in Kansas City, the reason for the move was about saving cost, according to the senior parade committee co-chair, as reported in the KC Star.
Theme
The parade has a theme every year, or at least since 1989, and for 2009 the theme is “Pioneering Spirit - The Irish in Kansas City”.
Irishman of the Year
The 2009 Mike Murphy Honorary Irishman of the Year is Kevin Ryan, the proprietor of Govenor Stumpy’s and organizer of the 2-day Celtic Festival that started life as the Celtic Block Party.
This award was created in 2005 in honour of retired radio host Mike Murphy and his role in creating and supporting the Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
