Morrissey in Missouri
Irish blood, English heart, Spanish Liver, Italian Sausage. Steven Patrick Morrissey is coming to Kansas City, Missouri. Oh, and St Louis.
Devious, truculent and unreliable; words from a judge to remember him by. Something to thank Mike Joyce for, I suppose.
Born of Irish parents, Manchester’s Moz has been enjoying a huge resurgence in popularity these last three years. Moving to Rome has helped, as has stopping pretending he was Los Angeles’ version of Quentin Crisp. Oh yes, and the records.
Without a label for a chunk of time not ordinary for a superstar - but then Mozza is no ordinary superstar - his last two albums have been universally acclaimed by the critics. There’s no point in noting the acclaim of the fans for these albums, because his fans acclaim everything he does. And now he’s doing Missouri.
After hiding for years in Clark Gable’s house in LA subsequent to feeling hounded out of Britain (even if he did live in Ireland) when he embraced the British flag before BritPop appropriated it from racists, both You Are The Quarry and Ringleader of the Tormentors have Morrissey back where the music world needs him, swanning around scattering disarming lyrics and malicious melodies.
Johnny Marr was wrong; Cilla Black was not a step too far. You were already there, mate - and if you’d stuck with your twisted sister, who knows what heights we might have heard since The Smiths.
Morrissey plays Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, May 23 2007 in the Uptown Theatre. Appearing with Morrissey is Kristeen Young. There is an unofficial after-Morrissey party at the Record Bar with big Mozza fan DJ Rico and Big Brother.
