Maura O’Connell in the Midwest
Somehow I forgot to tell you that Maura O’Connell is playing iKansas City TONIGHT, Saturday Frebruary 3rd - opening for the legendary John Prine at the Uptown Theatre.
It’s another lifetime since O’Connell was lead singer with Dé Danann, and many years since she moved to Nashville and reinvented herself as a singer in the American modern tradition of songs born of roots and of the last fifty years.
The last time I saw her perform was before that reinvention. It was in the hollow, in Dublin’s Phoenix Park one sunny Sunday afternoon, with a very pleasant hour walk home along the Liffey.
Truth be told, despite her wonderful voice, I wasn’t a huge fan of Maura O’Connell as vocalist for Dé Danann so it’s been great to watch her find her voice as she has blended American songs, Country songs, Bluegrass, Jazz, Pop, and yes, Irish. I mean, you’d hate to think that some people are just singing Irish songs because they believe they have to.
After Kansas City, Maura O’Connell movs with John Prine to Indiana (Feb 9 at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne), and Michigan (Feb 10 at the Kalamazoo State Theatre in Kalamazoo).
Visit Maura O’Connell’s official website for more dates. Try and catch her.
