Lemmy Speaks
Once upon a time I was listening to Fiona Looney talk to Gerry Ryan on his RTE 2FM radio show, when she started equating certain songs to the act of sex itself, being adamant that she wasn’t referring to love songs, or romance, or Jane Birken.
What on earth is she talking about I wondered as Gerry asked for an example. The Ace of Spades by Motorhead, she said. Ahh.
When I was of an age where liking the loudness of rock music was the norm, I generally didn’t. But my friends with longer hair did. That said I had a soft spot for Motorhead, which was mostly for the presence of Lemmy. Ugly, honest, and charismatic. And the Ace of Spades.
The classic Motorhead line-up with Lemmy was “Philthy Animal” Taylor on drums and “Fast” Eddie Clarke on guitar. When Clarke left he took his “Fast” moniker with him and formed Fastway, hiring a singer from Dublin for vocals.
That singer wasn’t quite happy with what he was doing, though he knew he wanted to write songs and sing. A few years later he made friends in an “Irish” pub in California called Molly Malone’s, and with his friends Dave King soon gave birth to what we now know as Flogging Molly, who you may have seen this last week in Missouri or Kansas.
Lemmy himself now lives in California, and somehow the Pitch got a scoop on an interview with him but as it was last-minute only managed to print an excerpt. Luckily, if you care about Motorhead or Lemmy, Jason Harper has published the whole shebang on the Wayward Blog
Motorhead play The Freakers Ball at the Community America Ballpark on Saturday, 28th October. Details HERE
