Kirsty MacColl
In Shane MacGowan’s latest yule blog Shane shares his thoughts about the role of the female singer in everybody’s favourite Christmas song on the sixth anniversary of Kirsty MacColl’s death.
Shane says that to say he has any favourites for that role other than Kirsty is to sully her name, but he does share a little something with us:
The role - and it is a role - frequently goes to Ella Finer, daughter of Jem in the band who co-wrote the song with me. It works fine with Ella, partly as it keeps it in the family, and partly because Fairytale is meant to be a song from an older man to a younger woman. And I knew her before she was born.
MacGowan also brings sad news of the passing of his former banjo player from the Popes, Tom “The Beast” McManamon. Tom has also guested with The Pogues, Depeche Mode, Joe Strummer, U2, Sinead O’Connor, and many more
