Irish Whiskey Tasting and Dinner at IMCC
The “Water of Life” is an Irish Whiskey Tasting and Dinner, sponsored by Jamesons, that takes place at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center in Union Station on Saturday, April 5, 2008 from 6 - 9pm.
For what it’s worth Jamesons is my whiskey of choice, and don’t you ever put anything into it, nor let an ice cube pass within 20 feet of it. Or I’ll kill you.
That said, I’d never turn down the stablemates that are Power’s Gold Label and Paddy, nor of course anything by Bushmill’s especially Black Bush.
Whiskey, when it’s Irish, is spelled with an “e”. Without that “e” you are talking Scotch. Always. Don’t ever get that wrong.
Depending on history I believe there are various rules that apply to the spelling of the North American variants.
I bring this up because people writing about Irish whiskey and spelling it “whisky” end up producing something that looks foreign to Irish people, like Mel Gibson with a blue face, or the way a Canadian Dollar might look to US citizens. And if you think a single letter shouldn’t be so important think how much more important your pop would be with an “e” added.
“Whiskey” of course comes from the Irish language word for water, uisce, because as Gaeilge (in Irish) whiskey is called uisce beatha or “water of life”.
Anyway, it is Sean Noonan of Jamesons in Dublin who is bringing several varieties of this quintessential Irish “water of life”, a visual presentation of the Jamesons distillery and his own expertise and passion to share with interested folk at the IMCC.
Woody, chocolate, warm, or smokey, are all kinds of bears. Oh ok they’re the sort of taste you can experience from Irish whiskeys. Head along to the IMCC and experience such nuances for yourself.
There is supposed to be an appropriate Irish buffet from O’Dowd’s and live music, but I find a lot of things appropriate with whiskey.
Admission: $40 IMCC members, $45 general, but the museum would like you to let them know if you’re attending, I gather by the RSVP request to call 816-474-3848 or email info [at] irishmuseum [dot] org
The IMCC is in Union Station, and that is located at 30 Pershing Road in case you’re not good on spotting enormous buildings.
