Ireland Like Kansas (Kevin Myers)
Kevin Myers, the much reviled commentator on life in Ireland uses the state of Kansas as a device for illustrating the moral state of modern Ireland.
We’re talking corrupt, by the way.
Kansas.
Not Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico or Missouri. But Kansas.
On the ongoing Mahon tribunal and its never-ending uncovering of corruption which has most of the country somewhere between aghast and cheerleading:
Why am I so against the tribunals? Here is the answer. Sink a spade into any part of Kansas, and you’ll find dirt. Likewise, Ireland. This is a dishonest, corrupt society, which is of course why Mahon is finding what it is finding.
If someone asked you where in the world you thought of when you thought of dirt, assuming you’re the kind of person who goes around thinking of dirt that is, would you come up with Kansas?
I’m only asking.
The article is in the Indo. I’m not a fan of Kevin, but it’s hard to disagree with much of what he says.
If you fancy seeing some of our national figures - Michael Collins, James Connolly, Eamon de Valera for example - being not revered, have a read.
