Dirty Old Town is of course the title of the Ewan McColl classic English folk song about Salford in Lancashire. Salford is by Manchester in the industrial north of England and depicted in many Lowry paintings.
Because Dublin has at times carried the pet name of Dirty Dublin, and even more because the Dubliners first, and the Pogues much later, made the song very popular in Ireland, many people think it is an Irish folk song and about Dublin. It is neither.
We discussed it earlier on Irish KC with Mike Webber mentioning the early Rod Stewart version of the song being his favourite. I still regard Luke Kelly with the Dubliners as being my favourite interpreter of this and many other MacColl songs.
Ewan was the father of Kirsty MacColl, and probably my favourite of the many songs he wrote is The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, made famous when Roberta Flack slowed it down - a long way from coal mines and shoals of herring, you’ll agree.
They’re actually playing now. The video you see was posted during their first set a couple hours ago. Why no love?

This post is nothing but love.
Did they actually start their gig at 7pm? Is the 11pm listed for all their Waxy gigs a mistake then?
Yeah, that post was live at Waxy’s …
