Dirty Old Rod Stewart
Speaking of mistakes by me, Mike Webber, responsible for the excellent review of The Pogues live in LA I highlighted a short while back, gently pulled me up on my introduction to that review.
In that quick flippant way I throw out posts I forgot that Rod Stewart had a musical life of note before he became a cartoon figure in the 1970s. So, far from Mike’s reference to Rod being unforgiveable, it was actually illuminating.
If you haven’t ever heard Rod Stewart’s version of Dirty Old Town from 1969, it’s a low-key yet funky arrangement, and a fine take on a great modern English folk song.
While Mike rated Rod’s version of the Ewan MacColl classic only just bettered by The Pogues version, I personally would still have The Dubliners version as the definitive whilst rating The Pogues‘ as one of my favourite.
Anyway, my introduction to Mike’s review might just have been an opinion but it was still wrong, so I changed it (Mike in no way asked or suggested I should - we simply engaged in some healthy musical debate)
