Celtic Music News Podcast #86
CMN Podcast #86 was released last night, and as ever it’s a mixed bag. Well not as ever, last week it wasn’t mixed at all, as it was all Enter the Haggis, but you know what I mean.
#86 begins with the Humble Hooligans, which is not my cup of tea. It’s heavy on the accent without the wit or invention of Damien Dempsey’s accent.
Donegal X-Press then follow with a singalong drinking ballad where you sway holding up your mobile phone in one hand and your beer in the other.
Kinship aren’t a million miles from the McCabes, and their tune is one you really have to listen to with your pants rolled up and your bare feet in the riverside mud.
Mudmen play quality rock. It’s heavy stuff, kind of like ZZ-Top tempered with Eels, and it falls into the genre that we call Celtic Rock because they intermittently and unnecessarily throw in some blistering bagpipes. Where do blistering bagpipes cause you to get blisters anyway?
And finally Runrig run riot, and incite you to the same. Big Country meets Big Clannad. A classy live track called Skye, and the very name of that island (give or take a bridge) should be enough to have you waving Saltires in terrified English faces, but just in case it doesn’t Runrig fire up your soul and ready you for war - or a life of crofting.
Listen carefully and you’ll also hear the quality of The Paperboys in the background
