Celtic Music News Podcast #64
The latest podcast from Celtic Music News, #64, has been released, and it’s mostly instrumental this week.
It opens with The Town Pants singing Plastered in Paris from the CD, Piston Baroque. Kind of a cross between The Men They Couldn’t Hang and an acoustic harmonious Pogues resulting in The Barenaked Irish Ladies (with Puns)
Shay’s Rebellion makes their debut on the show with the Amy Reel Set from the CD, Uprising, and it’s gently gorgeous but maybe could use a little bit more in the production department. Or maybe not.
Speaking of production, Searson follow with their Footstomp from the CD, Follow. Described as ‘kick-ass’ Celtic music so as not to be confused with The Elders ‘arse-kicking’ brand, it’s all rather BIG. Big sound, big production, plenty of crashing cymbals and footstomping all wrapped up in a kind of Devil Went Down to The Lord of the Dance way.
KC Irish Fest 2006 performers, Seven Nations continue the instrumental section with The Paddy Set from The Factory. I actually cope very well with the bagpipes this time, as they’re solo at first, give or take a feint background of Full Metal Jacket. But then for some reason we find ourselves in the middle of Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger. I’m all for punching the air, even to wordless anthems, but do we need to punch Apollo Creed anymore?
CMN 64 comes to a close, just like last week, with Runrig. Long before we smeared blue paint on our faces to leave a threatening Saltire of St Andrew, we used to just play Runrig. Soaring and rousing, pompous and pulsating, Runrig sent us running across long-grassed mountains to kill and to love. Last week I killed but this week Runrig’s Day of Days from the CD, Proterra has you hanging off the front of a racing sailship scanning the horizon for either a woman or an iceberg to make love to.
