Hansard & Irglova Live: Reviewed & Recorded
Last night’s gig at Kansas City’s Uptown Theatre of Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová gets a rave review from Timothy Finn on Back to Rockville, the music blog of the Kansas City Star.
And one of the most eagerly anticipated gigs in town didn’t disappoint the reviewer from the Pitch either.
Note also that this Once tour is being recorded, with individual gigs being made available for purchase (at $9.95) a few days after the performance.
Collectively known as The Swell Season, Glen & Marketa performed for 2 hours last night, both together and separately, performing some of the Once soundtrack, some Frames songs, and a cover of a Pixies song.
And that was all after a “fiery opening set” from a certain Damien Dempsey. But it was the interaction between the two Once stars and the audience that really grabbed Finn’s (and many commenters’) attention:
The real story this evening was the reception these two earned from a crowd so large it raised the temperature on the floor by about 15 degrees. You just don’t see music this artful, quaint and personal get the kind of reaction it got Monday evening.
Make sure you check out the comments too, for Hansard & Irglova certainly made an impression on much more people than the reviewer.
Over on the Wayward Blog, the Pitch’s music blog, Penny LaRocque also gives a great review of the night.

But the crowd adored her. Watching them sing duets reminded me of Reese Witherspoon as June Carter and Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line – she the delicate doll, he the fiery showman
