Guinness Night at KC’s Irish Museum & Culture Center
This evening, Saturday November 15th 2008 at 6pm there is a Guinness Sampling and Dinner Night at Kansas City’s Irish Museum & Culture Center in Union Station.
You are invited to “taste Ireland’s best beers, enjoy an Irish dinner and music, learn about Guinness history and brewing, practice the perfect pour”
I’d love to know more about this, particularly what is meant by “Ireland’s best beers”. We know Guinness is involved so does that mean its stablemates of Smithwick’s Ale and Harp Lager are also included? And much as I don’t like Murphy’s, a lot of people in Ireland prefer that stout to Guinness. Worlwide for some reason Beamish seems to win most awards for its stout, however bland I may find it.
Also to be honest I couldn’t even tell you if we still produce McArdle’s Ale or Phoenix. Or Caffrey’s. Mostly that’s because if I want to drink a good ale, I get on a boat and go to England. In Ireland I go to a pub and I drink stout. It’s where Guinness and I have a monogamous relationship; I won’t even look at other beers. It’s only abroad, when Guinness so often just doesn’t hack it, that I play around.
One of the great miseries of drinking Guinness in Kansas City was being unable to drink it in peace. With your eyes closed to the genitalia-shaped shamrock somebody had drawn on your head, the chances were slim of you being able to put your pint to your lips before some stranger felt the need to tell you all about the drink that you very obviously were already comitted to.
