Gan Bua Gan Gan in KC MO
Gan Bua gan “gan” is Bua.
And they’re playing Kansas City, Missouri.
Seriously.
For the last 2 years many people in Kansas City have asked me to name an Irish traditional band I’d like to see play Kansas City. And every time I answered Gan Bua.
Sometimes I mentioned other bands, like Bohola, but I’ve been plugging Gan Bua for some time. And lately it’s been the shorter name of Bua I’ve been plugging.
This weekend, Saturday May 3, 2008, at 8:00pm Bua are playing Kansas City in the Community Christian Church at 4601 Main Street.
It’s an MVFS gig so you know you’re talking talent. And in this case you’re doing it as Gaeilge
If you’ve read much of Irish KC over the last 2 years, you’ll have heard me talk about the sean-nós singing of Brian Hart.
There’s an mp3 of Brian Hart singing Neainsín Bhán on that page linked above, and one of Thug Mé Grá Duit on this page of a few songs I was listening to some arbitrary day.
But there’s much more to Gan Bua than Brian. They have instruments. And they have names. Jackie Moran on bodhrán, all kinds of percussion really, and banjo; Chris Bain on the fiddle; Sean Gavin on uillean pipes, flute, and tin whistle; and Brian Miller on guitar.
There shouldn’t be any need for me to talk about Gan Bua / Bua - I’ve repeatedly recommended they be booked. Have a read of every other band I’ve written about and compare. Fans of the royalty that are the Irish trad bands of Dé Danann, The Bothy Band and Planxty - this collection of Irish-American musicians is one which can lay claim to to the description of “supergroup”.

Columbia, MO
Bua are also playing in Columbia, Missouri the following night, May 4th, 2008 in the last Central Missouri Celtic Arts Association gig of the season at 7:30pm in the Unity Center of Columbia, at 1600 W. Broadway. Tickets for that concert are just $14/$12 and $10 for students/seniors.
(Gan) Bua is recording a new studio album due out in the Summer of 2008.
The Name
And that name business? You may have noticed the Irish word gan in my name. It means “without” and is pronounced somewhat like the English language word “gone”. Bua is talent. And if I was in Kansas City this weekend I’d be going to see a lot of it. Or cycling to Columbia.
