Ellis Island at McPherson Scottish Festival in Kansas
I’ve a soft spot for this festival in McPherson, Kansas. It was the first Scottish festival I attended in the US and as such the first place I realised just how far some people go when it comes to dressing up in ridiculous costumes.
You can tell how much I liked this festival by what I said last year.
Friends and regular visitors to KC, Ellis Island, who are based in Omaha, Nebraska, are among this year’s music entertainment at the McPherson Scottish Festival.
The main deal at the 14th annual McPherson Scottish Festival is the hosting of the official 2007 Masters World Championships (MWC) for Highland Athletics and the Masters Scottish Strongman Nationals (MSSN). The Highland competition dates back hundreds of years and the Strongman competition doesn’t. You can read more about these events in the McPherson Sentinel
As well as Mick Doyle and Dave Marsh of Ellis Island, you also have Hazel Whyte from Paisley in Scotland no less, and who you may have heard around Kansas City, among the entertainers. And so is Alex Beaton; and Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen.
The McPherson Scottish Festival takes place this weekend, September 22-23, 2007, at Lakeside Park with a crowd of 13,000 expected. It exists to celebrate the heritage of Scotland and the other Celtic nations, and “to encourage persons of Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and English family heritage and interest to connect with others of similar interest.”
McPherson itself is in central Kansas between Wichita and Salina. Visit the official festival website HERE
