Dublin Pubs Change to Stay the Same
Speaking of Dublin pubs, their character being maintained by Dublin’s immigrant population is featured in this IHT article on a pub run by Korean on the site of a famous pub I used to drink in the odd time myself.
The efforts of immigrant bartenders to respect local traditions are seen as a plus by many Dubliners. In contrast, Davy Byrne’s, with some antique fittings, feels upscale and shiny; its lunch menu, served to crowds of literary tourists and sharply dressed office-workers, boasts oysters and braised pheasant. It just shows that tourism solely about making money can kill things, so it’s usually a living population not a tourist one that sustains a true culture - ironically the one that should be visited by tourists.
