Dear Ireland, Kansas City is hot
I know you’ve had a nice Irish summer - sunny, muggy, hot even - but right now in Kansas City, at just after four in the morning, it is 30 degrees centigrade outside. And inside my horrible house it’s 32 degrees, for try as I might I can’t get the relatively cooler air on the outside to come in and stay a while.
Today when the sun comes up, we’ll go up to 40 degrees. Again. It’s been up there for most of the last three weeks except for a brief bizarre almost cool couple of days. ‘Cool’ is 26 degrees centigrade. Incidentally, the weather website I use labels Fahrenheit ‘English’ and Centigrade/Celsius ‘Metric’.
And it’s humid. Very. This happens every year. They call them the dog days, though usually they go a few degrees hotter. In truth it’s been a relatively mild summer overall. Though in these dog days everybody says “Hot enough for ya” instead of “Hello“. Or they would if they were out there.
Walking is stupid. Cycling is fine just so long as you never stop. Think Sally O’Brien and the egg. And the online weather map of the middle of the country doesn’t say “Hot”, or “Very Hot” - no, today it says “Life-Threatening Heat”. That’s worse than “Muggy”
