Could Irish American Immigration Get a Teacher Fired?
Irish American Immigration is among the subjects that a Shawnee Mission North teacher taught his students before receiving reprimand letters from his principal about sticking to course obectives as outlined in the district curriculum guides.
The Pitch has a story about Ned Scott, a teacher of 22 years, and his unorthodox teaching methods, that have engaged his students and now launched a support page on FaceBook with close to 1,000 members.
I must say, using popular culture references to get students to relate their own teenage culture to other cultures in the world, seems like common sense and entirely appropriate to me, but education in schools rarely includes actual education.
Other subjects that have engaged Scott’s students but might not appear on the Kansas State Assessment include immigrant workers in Los Angeles, migrant farm workers in the Midwest, and India as an ancient religious center.
