Connie Dover
Connie Dover is very familiar to Kansas City as a beautiful singer of Irish and Celtic songs. For many years Connie has been performing at Irish festivals in the region, and in all manner of quality collaborative arrangements.
A true lover of traditional folk music, and a student of music and its history, Dover is blessed, if not indeed possessed by, a stunning voice.
Perhaps it’s a curse, for whatever Connie sings she is likely to render a beauty onto it, but luckily for us that’s not all she does. Dover draws from the great traditions of Ireland and Scotland, and those of their pioneering American descendants, as she weaves a living history of all that is folk for those touched by a Celtic American heritage.
You can hear Connie sing as Gaeilge on the 2000 album The Border of Heaven, as she performs An Spailpín Fánach. For those of you who only listen to Irish music while consuming copious amounts of alcohol, you’ll recognize it as the same tune as the popular drinking song, The Waxies Dargle. It is also, of course, more popularly again, known as The Girl I Left Behind Me.
Speaking of singing as Gaeilge (in Irish), I particlularly like In Aimsir Bhaint an Fhéir from Connie’s 1994 album Wishing Well. You can listen to this track on Connie Dover’s MySpace page.
One of the great female voices, anywhere, in folk music today.
