Blue Springs: A Short Walk in the Rain
The Examiner has a piece on Blue Springs self-styled “Shortest & Smallest” St Patrick’s Day parade.
It’s the 66 foot parade across the street, complete with floats, even if they are carried.
The article says that only three people - Bill Whitley, Jim Wallace and Pat Meyer - are considered official paraders - and the accompanying photo also identifies the parading grand marshal Bill Wrisinger.
Then revelers line up and cross the street, singing Irish tunes. But they barely have time to sing two choruses before they slip inside the Gridiron Bar and head for the green beer or coffee.
In spite of the rain, everything - from the brief march of about 30 people accompanied by a trumpeter, to the makeshift tent erected just outside the door of the Soda Shop by Blue Springs police - went off without a hitch.
Even the parade’s grand marshal, Bill Wrisigner, was brief in his comments when mentioning the rain.
For next year, planners say they would like to erect an arch in the street, decorated with balloons and all things Irish.
