Bishop Boland’s Brother Celebrates 50 Years Since Becoming a Priest
On Wednesday, the Diocese of Savannah are honoring Irishman Bishop Kevin J Boland for the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. You’ll know him, or not, as the brother of Kansas City’s Bishop Boland.
Kevin has spent this whole careeer in Georgia, in the diocese of Savannah.
Born in County Cork, Ireland, Boland is one of four brothers and the second among them to become a priest and bishop. His brother, Raymond Boland, is the Bishop Emeritus of Kansas City-Saint Joseph, Mo.
When Boland arrived in the U.S. in 1959, his only other experience outside of his native Ireland was a trip to England.
Stepping off the airplane, the September heat of south Georgia “pressed me into the ground,” Boland said through a softened brogue. “I wasn’t prepared for this type of humidity. And to this day I don’t like it.”
