American Presidents of Irish Descent
Launching what is being called the Irish Season at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center, is a month long exhibit celebrating the 19 Irish-American presidents to date.
From February 1 to March 2, 2008 the exhibit, Presidential Portraits: American Presidents of Irish Descent takes place at the Irish Center in Union Station, and if the respective presidents weren’t your particular cup of tea, well it also includes short biographies of their spouses.
Did you know that in the 2000 US census 24.5 million Americans claimed English descent but that in the census 20 years earlier 50 million Americans claimed English ancestry? This massive reduction meant that Irish-Americans became the biggest ancestral group after those claiming German ancestry, pushing English-Americans further down the list.
Could it be that in such a short period over 25 million Americans died? Surely claiming ancestry isn’t subject to fashion?
Admission:
$5 adults, $4 IMCC members & seniors, $2 students (under 6 free) and there are group & family rates.
