3 Irish Movies Receive Oscar Nominations
There was much excitement in Ireland yesterday as 3 Irish Film Board funded movies received Oscar nominations.
A total of 5 Academy Award nominations went to the Irish film industry yesterday, 3 of which were for Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board funded projects.
The Secret of Kells directed by Tomm Moore and produced by the Kilkenny based independent animation, Cartoon Saloon, was nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Irish short film The Door written and directed by Juanita Wilson was nominated in the Best Short Film (Live Action) category.
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty directed by Nicky Phelan was nominated in the Best Short Film (Animation) category.
The Secret of Kells features the voices of Irish national treasures Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally. An Irish-French-Belgian co-production, it’s an Irish story, of an orphan named Brendan who is given the job to finish the Book of Kells. So it features a very Irish art as well:
Mind you, I prefer this older trailer. The Secret of Kells is scheduled to open in US cinemas on March 19, 2010.
The Door is already a film much decorated with awards, including the Best Short Film at the 2008 IFTAs (Irish Film & Television Awards). It’s based on a true story of a father and daughter in Russia in the 1980s, and any film which starts with the stealing of a door gets my vote.
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty is the 2nd time Irish animation studio Brown Bag Films have received an Oscar nomination. You might remember they were nominated a few years ago for the Give Up Your Auld Sins adaptation.
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty is already immensely popular and much loved, and the fillm has won several awards. Granny O’Grimm herself has a website, and is quite popular among my fellow tweeters on twitter. WATCH THE FILM HERE - fire it up onto fullscreen. It’s only 6 minutes.
The other Irish nominations the Irish film industry is proud of are, Richard Baneham in the Best Visual Effects category for his work on Avatar, and Peter J Devlin who has been nominated in the Best Sound Achievement category for his work on Star Trek which adds to his previous nominations for Pearl Harbor and Transformers
