12 KC Wizards Eligible for All Star Celtic Game - Hmmm
12 Kansas City Wizards players are eligible for election to the 2007 MLS All-Star team to play Scottish giants, Celtic FC on July 19, 2007 in Commerce City, Colorado.
The formation is predetermined at 3-5-2, to prevent people voting six goal-keepers onto the team I presume, but still, three defenders? What’s wrong with the classic 4-4-2?
For what it’s worth, speaking as a football fan (i.e. soccer) I think All-Star games are a load of rubbish. They’re money-making exercises of little sporting value. If you must reward players with recognition in their field of play, do so notionally - but don’t make them take the field in a meaningless challenge game and tell people it means something.
Like the split of the season into regular and play-off portions, All-Star games in American soccer have always struck me as an inappropriate import from other American sports.
Celtic (pronounced ‘Seltic’ in this case) are coming to America to cash in on their global Scottish and Irish appeal; they are not coming here to tear cruciate ligaments. Eddie Johnson may well get voted on for the Wizards, but if so, risking injury in an exhibition game would be insane.
Voting ends on Monday, June 25, 2007, and the All-Star team will be coached by the coach of whatever team has the most points in the MLS at that time.
