If I was going to design the profile of an island. the shape of Tory would never be employed - simply because it’s so magnificent as to seem too far-fetched. The first time I saw it, rising out of the atmosphere of cloud and water, it was an Irish moment of the highest geographic splendour for me - up there with the raised bogs of the midlands and the cliffs of Moher. Some evenings I would stare at it, from 12 miles away, until its shape softly disappeared into night, leaving me its lights as a marker for the morning.
