Tom O’Malley’s Locks & Pulls of Overland Park, KS
Tom O’Malley’s Locks & Pulls of Overland Park, Kansas was featured in yesterday’s Kansas City Star.
Locks & Pulls should be familiar to the Irish community particularly due to their co-hosting of KC’s very popular neighborhood Irish festival - the annual Celtic Block Party at Governor Stumpy’s.
Sean O’Byrne has all three types on the double doors of his 125-year-old Kansas City Victorian home. “The solicitor goes right for the doorbell, while the kids like the twist in the door,” O’Byrne said. “But I think the Claddagh door knocker is truly the welcoming point.”
After examining the original doors to his Victorian, O’Byrne realized the mechanical twist was the original form of greeting for the home. The doorbell was added later, and the Irish-motif knocker was O’Byrne’s own personal statement. All three are brass and create a unified look.
O’Byrne’s Claddagh knocker has a crown, representing loyalty; a heart, representing love; and hands, representing friendship. “The door knocker is really a reflection of my Irish heritage,” he said. “And it’s a subtle way of saying, ‘Welcome’ when you come to my door.”
