Roscommon Big in Kansas (and Canada)
My favourite Roscommon paper, The Roscommon Herald, has more details on how the USHA National Championships in Overland Park, KS went down, just after Christmas. We’re talking handball - remember?
You’ll see that the Irish handballers from Connacht did very well in Kansas, and that those from Roscommon are doing particulalry well on the world scene at the moment:
Roscommon won six world titles in Canada and two USHA titles in Kansas City. Roscommon were also runners-up in five world titles in Canada and Grainne Cunniffe of Curraghboy won an intervarsity title in the USA. A total of 27 titles on the national scene from U-15 to over 60s were captured along with a Community Games U-13 boys silver medal for Roscommon/ Kilteevan. No sport in Roscommon can compare with that record.
Time was when I used to go to Croke Park regularly and watch Dublin beat Roscommon in Gaelic Football, so I guess they went home and conceived of plans, or children, to dominate another sport.
