Nominations for the 2008 Irish Blog Awards
Were I a better person I would have kept record of the paragraphs I wrote in support of each of my nominations for the 2008 Irish Blog Awards. But I didn’t.
Instead I let my experience and familiarity with many Irish blogs ferment until I knew what I wanted to nominate, and then I wrote each supporting reason off the cuff directly into the form.
And now it turns out that not only can I not remember the reasons I gave for my nominations, but I can’t remember exactly my actual nominations. That’s fermentation for ya.
Perhaps in future years, for forgetful people like me, the email confirmation you get when you complete the nomination form could also contain the details you entered in the form?
I know I had Bock for the big one of Best Blog. And Sweary’s Local Anesthetic for Best Blog Post, and FatMammyCat’s Motherly Confusion for Most Humorous Post.
Daithi I had for Best Arts & Culture - and I also had him in the running for Best individual post - and Medbh an easy choice for Best Pop Culture.
Annie for something, Best Personal I think, if not Specialist. Flirty for something else, Best Specialist maybe, if not Personal? Nialler9 for Best Music Blog - yes again. Darren for Best Photo, though Annie throws some powerfully iconic images together at times.
Haydn I championed for Best Tech - and I was quite passionate in my reasons for this one. Eoin Purcell for Best something I can’t remember. Would it have been Business? But it’s not a business blog. Maybe that was the Specialist one? Shane for Best by a Journalist.
One For for something, and Manuel for something else, probably Food. Primal was ruled out for all categories because awards aren’t his bag, and I thank him not for making me have to look further and harder.
I forget what I nominated for Politics, for Group, and for Design. And there was a couple of categories I didn’t nominate in, notably Best Use of Irish, because I felt not familiar enough, and without enough time to get familiar.
Tomorrow the leaks end and the long lists are out and that should help with the familiarty process - for next year. Yes that means, if you’re somehow unaware, that the nominations closed a long time ago and we’re about to be into the judging of Round 1 to produce Round 2 for further judging.
Without a popular vote, and together with new nomination rules hopefully this year will throw up some new sites that most of us otherwise would keep missing.
