Irish Music is Not all Blustery and Heart Wrenching
When talking about David Gray being at the Galway Arts Festival, we mentioned Bell X1. They too now get their space in the Galway Independent which has an interview with Paul Noonan.
It’s years since Bell X1 have shaken off the references to being the band that Damien Rice was once front man of (when known as Juniper) - except for people like me who keep bringing it up. It is spectacularly unfair of course because as recently as April this year, in the Top 100 albums of all time, as chosen by the musicians of Ireland (they have a club) and compiled by HotPress Bell X1 are the only Irish performers in the top 50, apart of course from the holy trinity of Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy and U2.
Anyway Paul agrees that there’s a real excitement about Irish music these days:
The Irish music scene is buzzing at the moment. I like bands like The Chalets and Republic of Loose. They’re making wonderfully produced music that’s like American rhythm and blues. It’s good to break the stereotype that Irish music is all blustery and heart wrenching (laughs)
