Irish Language Course in Kansas City
This autumn you’ll get your chance to spot all the dodgy bits of Irish you see around town, and maybe write your own.
As alluded to before, in Kansas City there will be a course in the Irish language, what we call Gaeilge - when we’re not calling it “Irish” - while you more typically call it Gaelic.
It will take place at the Irish Museum & Cultural Center (IMCC) as the center grows into a focal point for matters Irish in Kansas City and the region, and it is being scheduled to run for 10 weeks.
The details of the schedule are not set yet so if you are interested please contact the IMCC at 816-474-3848 (10am-4pm Wed-Sat, noon-4pm Sundays) for information on fees and to let them know what day of the week and time would be best for you.
I can tell you that the teacher will be very good, (we indulge regularly in some Irish communication) and that learning Irish for 10 weeks would teach you so much about Irish culture in general, even that expressed through English. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have a serious peep into your heritage that you cherish. If it is your heritage, and you do cherish it, that is.
Until then, and not to frighten you, but why not have a little look at the introductory Irish lessons I posted last year (and should post the rest when I can find a minute).
Or have a goo at the Glossary of Gaeilge and marvel at the strange looking words and phrases, but note how many you’re already familiar with.
The IMCC is located at Union Station at 30 Pershing Road, Suite 700 in Kansas City, Missouri, 64108 and you can send emails there by way of info [at] irishmuseum [dot] org

Why aren’t you teaching the class, Eolai?

Sassywho, oh no, I’ve been given homework!
“I can tell you that the teacher will be very good, (we indulge regularly in some Irish communication” Is the teacher your dog?
Elizabeth, the dog has a very poor temperament, not suited for teaching at all - not enough patience and very argumentative (though the dog disagrees with this).
I’m thinking of yielding to pressure and posting a picture of said animal.
I think you should. I’ve never seen a talking dog before.
Ádh mór le daoine an IMCC chun an teanga milis seo a scaipeadh. Go n-éirí leo go léir!
Gotcha, Eolai. You’re going home.
