Irish Language Circle in Kansas City
In a brave and ambitious move, the Kansas City Gaelic Football Club has announced the establishment of an Irish language circle.
The aim of the circle is to bring together those with an interest in the language to practice speaking and ideally progress with it while having a good time into the bargain.
The Irish language is what we Irish call Gaeilge, and Americans commonly refer to as Gaelic (Gaelige being Irish for Gaelic, if you follow).
With the recent Irish language classes at the Irish Museum & Cultural Center in Union Station, there should be an increase in those interested in an opportunity to practice any amount of the language.
All levels of knowledge and skill are welcome and encouraged to attend, from those with no experience to native speakers, which means you should have nothing to fear, though I’d be quite surprised if there actually are any native speakers within range of Kansas City.
If you have no knowledge at all, or very little, then you should know that learning materials will be supplied at no cost.
The first meeting of the circle is scheduled for Sunday, 5 January 2008 at 1pm. The circle will be meeting at O’Dowd’s Pub in Zona Rosa for what is planned to be a relaxed and social attempt at conversing in the language of so many ancestors of those in the Kansas City. But will they turn up?
There’s a MySpace page for the KC Gaelic Football Club and you can always send an email for more information to Craobhru [at] gmail [dot] com.
