Irish Government to Entice Home Irish Illegals in US
Ireland’s Sunday Business Post today is reporting that the Irish Government is planning a campaign to entice illegal Irish immigrants in New York back to fill skilled jobs at home in Ireland.
It seems odd the campaign is solely targetting immigrants in New York when there are thousands of illegal Irish all over the US. If you look hard enough there’s an illegal Irish person underneath your Kansas City carpet.
The campaign is scheduled to start in the autumn, and will include flying Revenue Commissioners staff and Social Welfare Pension staff to New York to advise Irish emigrants on tax and pension issues. Irish State employment agency, FAS, will be advertising the campaign in newspapers and running seminars across New York.
Gregory Craig, corporate affairs director at FAS, has been asking the Irish Goverment what they are doing for their own people in New York:
The concern is that if you are in your mid-30s or mid-40s and have worked in the US for 15 years and have done reasonably well, they need to know what the pension situation is and they need to know from the Revenue where they stand
Something else that strikes me as odd about this $300,000 campaign, is that it seems to assume that the 70,000 (up from 50,000 you’ll note) undocumented Irish, actually might want to go home - or even call Ireland home any more. The blogs I read all talk about people who want to go home to visit only, for holidays, funerals, and the Munster Hurling Final.
I guess it’ll all come out in the seminars. I’ll keep an eye and see if your undocumented address really needs to change from being undocumented in one of the other 50 States to being undocumented in New York, before you and your skills can get advice on returing to Ireland.
