Irish Conversation in the American Midwest #16
Left
-You guys drive on the wrong side of the road don’t you?
-We drive on the left, yes
-Do you not find that weird?
-Not there, no. But here I can see it’s different, yes
-You don’t think it’s weird?
-Why would I?
-Because it’s the wrong side of the road
-Wrong for who?
-We drive on the right
-Yes, I’ve noticed
-I could never drive on the other side
-Well it isn’t the other side when we’re doing it
-How do you mean?
-The other side is the side you don’t drive on, wherever you happen to be
-I don’t understand how you can drive on the other side
-If you were born and lived in a country which drove on the left, you’d drive on the left and you’d find driving on the right different
-No, I wouldn’t. I just couldn’t drive on the other side
-It’s not an issue. There is no other side until you change countries
-Why don’t you guys change to driving on the right like us?
-It’s kind of tricky to change the system now
-But wouldn’t it be easier?
-For who? For you?
-If everybody drove on the same side it would be easier for everybody
-But Ireland is an island, and everybody on the island drives on the same side
-I couldn’t do it. I know I couldn’t do it
-If that was the system you grew up with, you would without thinking
-No. It’s just wrong. I know I couldn’t do it
-So if you were born in Ireland, you’d grow up, and then the first time you’d drive you’d just crash head-on into the first car you’d see?
-That’s why I couldn’t do it
