Irish Biotech Firm for Lawrence, Kansas
Back in the early 1990s when Kansas City and the rest of the US had Irish people arriving on Morrison Visas I had an Irish friend in England much more suited to living in Ireland. Working in biotechnology he said it could never happen as even with an upturn in Ireland’s economy there just wouldn’t be enough jobs. So when he left England he moved to the US.
And you all know what happened next. Predicted by none of the people who predict the forthcoming Irish property market bust, Ireland’s economy went nuts. And along with I.T. and tourism, biotechnology was one of the industries on which successive booms have flourished.
So now, Ireland not only employs many people like my friend who returned home from the US, but exports biotech jobs to the US:
Irish biotech firm IdentiGEN is to set up a US subsidiary. The company, based at the Trinity Enterprise Centre in Dublin, intends to open up an operation in Kansas, where it hopes to employ several hundred staff in the future on genetic technologies which can track meat back to its source

The Kansas City Star however, in reporting this move to Lawrence, Kansas, thinks that Dublin is still in the UK, Dublin being where the head office of IdentiGEN is located. Geography and history lesson time for Jason Gertzen.
