Ireland Lose Convincingly: I’m Convinced
The first time Ireland has conceded four goals at home since a certain 4-1 defeat to Denmark in 1985, was last night against the Dutch. I’ve heard nobody sing ole-ole-ole.
Time was I wouldn’t have missed an Ireland home game for the world, but I’m still recovering from what Jack Charlton did to Irish football, so being in the country at the same time I was happier to be playing football with a bunch of kids than be at Lansdowne.
Mind you, cruelly I was on the losing side in that game also, losing 12-11 somewhat controversially when the game was ended by somebody grabbing the ball because dinner was ready.
Last night’s game was also the worst home defeat by an Irish side in 40 years, which should let you know that Ireland were actually okay at playing football before Charlton. Luckily friendlies don’t matter, or else the FAI would be wondering just how shabbily they treated previous Ireland manager, Brian Kerr.
In March last year in the highly flawed FIFA rankings, Ireland were ranked 12th in the world, and presently they are 39th. I wonder where they’ll be after they play Germany in two weeks as they begin their qualifying campaign for Euro 2008.
