Harlings Upstairs in KC on St Patrick’s Day 2009
Once upon a time Harling’s Upstairs was the favourite pub of many Irish in Kansas City. Since then the title for this fickle crowd moved on to O’Dowd’s, then McBride’s, then Molloy’s, then The Gaf, and the dubious honour now rests with Raglan Road.
In that time Molloys and McBride’s have gone out of business, O’Dowd’s and The Gaf, have stayed the same, and Harlings has actually improved.
For some years now on St Patrick’s Day, music has been provided by former house Irish music performer Jonathan Ramsey. A resident nowadays of St Louis, Jonathan returns every year to Kansas City to entertain the patrons of Harlings (and Lew’s Big-Tented Irish Hoolie in Waldo).
Jonathan sings “delightfully brash Irish songs of life, protest, longing, and shame”, and what more could you want? Music by Jonathan Ramsey is from 6pm until the last man or woman is standing. Or maybe until 1am.
You can also hear bagpipers at 1:00pm, and there’s an Irish sing-a-long from 2-5pm.
On St Patrick’s Day 2009, Harlings opens at 10am.
Harlings Upstairs is located at 3941 Main Street - and as you’d expect, you’ll have to go upstairs.
You can phone (816) 531-0303 for more information. Once upona time it was my voice you would have heard on the other end of that number, but I expect they’ve changed it by now.
